Recently I was a participant for a research study where they asked me a question, “What is your definition of mental health?” That question left me blank for a moment while I found myself deep in thought. After years of working, learning and being around the mental health space, I found myself at a loss of words for a few seconds, then I came up with a definition.
Mental health for me is a state of well-being where one is able to be at peace with their present reality, be aware of their emotions and have the ability to express them in helpful ways, and also cope with stressful situations in healthy ways while not causing any harm to themselves or others.
Of course this is a highly ideal definition and rarely would this ever be true because of the ever-changing nature of our emotional, social, behavioural and cognitive landscapes. But this makes me really curious about what “optimal” mental health, or the “ideal” mental health state, would look like for you.
This brings me to the focal point of today’s blog, Mental Health Affirmations. As we move into a new season, May, we also observe Mental Health Awareness being recognized throughout the month.
Today, in this blog, let’s begin our month of May with affirmations that bring us steadiness, calmness, solace, focus, and trust in ourselves. Here are some mental health affirmations for you:

- I can support myself through difficult feelings.
- I am allowed to soften to my emotions.
💛 When You Feel Alone
- I am not the only one who feels this way.
- I am worthy of support.
- I can ask for help when I need it.
- I do not have to do everything alone.
- I deserve to be heard.
- My struggles do not make me difficult to love.
- I am allowed to lean on others.
- I can receive care.
- I matter.
- Asking for help doesn’t make me a burden.
🍃 Coming Back to Yourself
- I can always return to myself.
- My breath can guide me back to myself and the present.
- I trust myself to take the next gentle step.
- I can reconnect with what feels grounding.
- I do not need to rush my journey.
- I can choose what supports me today.
- I trust my needs.
- I am learning what helps me feel safe.
- I can care for myself in softer ways.
- I am here, and that is enough right now.
Perhaps mental health is not what I defined it as, but simply the courageous act of supporting yourself through all your inner seasons, giving yourself what you need, and still deciding not to abandon yourself in difficult seasons.
I hope these affirmations offer you a little softness, strength, and support this month, and gently remind you that your mental health matters. 💚
