In this loud and often overstimulating world, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed at times. This can be triggered by things around us or by what we are experiencing within. When this happens to me, I feel irritable, anxious, or on edge, and often find myself wanting to be alone or in a quieter space. Emotions, too, can sometimes feel like too much, especially if you are someone who feels things deeply.
In moments like these, what we may need most is grounding. Grounding is a gentle, self-soothing practice that can help you come back to yourself and the present moment. It can support you in feeling a little more centered when you are having a difficult day or moving through stress, overwhelming feelings, or intense anxiety. It can help you reconnect with the present, become more mindful, and gently reorient yourself to reality. Sometimes, it can also offer a small pause from what you are experiencing.
Here are some affirmations that could help you come back to the present moment when you feel overwhelmed or stuck in your head:
🌱 Coming Back to the Present Moment
- I can slow down, even if everything feels intense.
- I am allowed to pause and take a breath.
- I can come back to this moment slowly, one step at a time.
- I do not need to handle everything at once.
- I am safe to take a moment for myself.
- I can gently bring my attention back to what is around me right now.
- I am here, and only this moment is real right now.
- I can soften my body into this moment, gently and gradually.
- I allow myself to settle at my own pace.
- I can take things one moment at a time.
🍃 Anchoring Yourself in Your Surroundings
- I notice what I see, hear, and feel around me.
- I anchor myself in small, simple things right here, right now.
- I do not need to react immediately to what I feel.
- I give myself space before responding.
- I allow my breath to guide me back to calm.
- I can feel my feet on the ground beneath me and how they connect me to the present.
- I am allowed to slow my thoughts down.
- I can return to my body softly.
- I can let this moment be as it is.
- I do not need to figure everything out right now.
🌿 Holding Your Feelings Gently
- I can feel these feelings without being consumed by them.
- This feeling may be heavy, but it will pass with time.
- I welcome my feelings as they are with compassion and curiosity.
- I can sit with my emotions and support them with what they need.
- I am allowed to take a break from anything that I need to, for my well-being.
- I can hold myself with patience and care as I gently accept my emotions.
- I can choose to stay with the feelings in this present moment.
- I can let this wave of feelings move through me.
- I am not alone in feeling this way and I’m always here for myself.
- I can come back to myself, again and again, with love for myself.
I hope these feel like small, supportive anchors you can return to whenever things feel heavy, helping you find your way back to yourself. 🌸
