The fellowship seeks to support and amplify voices of people of Asian descent writing on Buddhism, culture, and life for a predominately North American audience.
Over the course of a year, fellows will develop a body of work for publication across Lion’s Roar’s channels with mentorship from our editors. Fellows’ work may be written, video, audio or a combination of formats, depending on their interests and experience.
The fellowship is intended to offer more than publication alone. It is an opportunity to develop your voice and ideas with experienced editors, build relationships with a cohort of fellow creators, and connect with established voices working at the intersection of Buddhism, culture, and contemporary life.
As a Bodhi Leaves Fellow, you will:
- Develop and publish six pieces with Lion’s Roar. In conversation with our editors, you’ll identify the subjects and formats you want to explore and develop a body of work over the course of the year.
- Receive individual editorial support. You’ll have at least two dedicated one-on-one meetings with a Lion’s Roar editor to develop ideas, plan your work, and discuss your growth as a writer or media maker, in addition to the normal editorial collaboration involved in preparing individual pieces for publication.
- Join a community of peers. Four 90-minute online cohort gatherings will provide space to share experiences, discuss the creative and editorial process, and learn from one another.
- Connect with experienced Buddhist voices and media professionals. Fellows will have opportunities during the year to meet and learn from members of the Lion’s Roar editorial community and established writers, teachers, and creators.
- Reach Lion’s Roar’s audience. Fellowship work will be published and promoted through appropriate Lion’s Roar channels, giving fellows the opportunity to bring their work and perspectives to an established North American audience interested in Buddhism and contemplative practice.
- Receive a $2,000 USD stipend, paid in four quarterly installments based on continued participation and progress in the fellowship. The Lion’s Roar Bodhi Leaves Fellowship has been generously funded by the Henry Luce Foundation.
This online fellowship is designed to support both emerging and established creators and dharma or mindfulness teachers of Asian descent who are engaged with Buddhist thought and/or mindfulness meditation, in alignment with Lion’s Roar’s mission to communicate Buddhist wisdom and practices for the benefit of people’s lives, and to support the development of Buddhism in contemporary society. Moreover, we are interested not only in what you have already made, but in what you want to explore, develop, or say next.
The fellowship is open to U.S. and Canadian residents who have the legal right to work in either the U.S. or Canada. Those wishing to create audio or video works are expected to already have facility with these media and the tools required to make them; Lion’s Roar will not provide technical audio or visual media skill development. If you have any questions about your eligibility, please reach out to bodhileaves@lionsroar.com.
The fellowship begins March 1, 2027 and runs until February 28, 2028.
To apply, please complete our application form. Applications are open until December 31, 2026.
