When I think of the word gratitude, many thoughts and memories swirl through my mind, some filled with chaos or sadness and others with pure joy. I have had life-altering experiences, both positive and not so positive, that led me to a better understanding of gratitude. This includes awareness and compassion for my community, others, and myself, appreciation for what I have and what others have to offer, and resilience.

Intentionally practicing gratitude brings feelings of happiness, which in turn leads to more gratitude. This year, as I turn 60, instead of feeling stressed or “un-youthful,” I have decided to embrace this milestone with gratitude. Realizing I have many things to be grateful for has shifted my mindset in small but powerful ways. These include being able to practice self-care without guilt, building stronger relationships, learning new things and sharing those experiences with others, and adding new challenges physically, emotionally, personally, and professionally. All of these are part of my gratitude journey.

I continue to work on my goals and intentions with a positive mindset. I keep a daily gratitude journal and joy list, create vision boards, learn from others, and use positive affirmations, articles, and personal stories through the Gratitude App. I surround myself with people who inspire and motivate me. I plan to experience my 60th year with new opportunities and experiences, big or small, that bring me comfort and make my heart happy.

I am grateful for those who indulge me and, more importantly, support me along the way. Knowing that not every experience will be golden, but that each holds an opportunity for learning, is essential. Taking time to notice the small things in others, in nature, in your career, and even in yourself can make a real difference in developing a positive growth mindset.

Change your thoughts. Change your journey.
