Our relationship with resting, slowing down, relaxing, being still, or being bored, can vastly differ based on our life experiences, learning and our habits. Lately, I’ve observed that people are growing less tolerant to relaxing, boredom or slowing down. We may go on vacations to chill away from work or academics, but does changing the environment, make it any easier for us to rest?
If your relationship with rest until now has felt fragile, unhelpful, or inconsistent, you’re in the right place. What matters now is how you change that. One of the ways to reinforce new beliefs about resting and to improve your relationship with stillness, relaxation, and boredom, is to practice reading, listening to, or repeating affirmations to yourself, each time you experience resistance, discomfort, or impatience arise against it.
Here are a few affirmations to get started:
🌱 Giving Yourself Permission to Rest 🌱
I am allowed to rest.
I do not need to earn my rest.
I give myself permission to pause.
I am allowed to slow down.
It is okay to do less today.
I can step away without explaining myself.
I am allowed to take breaks when I need them.
Rest is a natural and necessary part of my life.
I deserve moments of stillness and quiet.
I allow myself to stop, even if things are unfinished.
💛 Releasing Guilt Around Rest 💛
I am not doing anything wrong by resting.
Resting does not make me lazy.
I am good enough, even when I am not doing anything.
I release the need to always be productive.
My worth is not measured by how much I do.
I can rest without overthinking it.
I allow myself to pause without pressure.
I can let go of guilt, even if just for a moment.
I am allowed to take care of myself by slowing down.
I choose to soften the expectations I place on myself.
🌸 Quieting the Mind 🌸
I allow my mind to slow down.
I do not need to figure everything out right now.
I can take a break from thinking.
My mind is allowed to rest.
I can return to this later.
I allow my thoughts to pass without holding onto them.
I give my mind permission to slow down and become still.
I can sit in stillness without needing to fill it.
I let go of mental noise with every deep breath I take.
I allow and focus on the space between my thoughts and calm down.
🍃 Moving Gently and Slowing Down 🍃
I allow softness into my life.
I choose to move gently through this moment.
I can take things one step at a time.
I do not need to rush through everything.
I allow myself to go at my own pace.
I soften my body and my breath.
I can move slowly and still be moving forward.
I allow ease where I can.
I can choose gentleness over urgency.
I let myself settle into the present moment.
🌷 Trusting Rest 🌷
Rest supports and revitalizes me.
Rest restores and replenishes me.
I trust that rest is helping me.
My body knows how to recover when I let it.
I trust and respect my need for rest.
Taking a break is supporting my wellbeing.
I am allowed to listen to what I need.
I can trust myself to pause when needed.
I am learning to care for myself in gentler ways.
