If you met eighteen year old Latifia today, you would see a bright and confident student leader who thrives on taking on new challenges. She is outspoken, highly social, and planning a future career in technology. But if you had met her five years ago, she would have seemed like a completely different person.
Back in 2021, thirteen year old Latifia was facing a difficult time in her life. The pandemic brought an abrupt shift to online classes while she was in the eighth grade, leaving her completely unmotivated and disconnected. She felt out of place and struggled to find her purpose. Alongside the isolation of studying through a screen, she was dealing with the stress of relocating and leaving cherished old memories behind.
The days began to blur together. She received bad school reports and missed classes for days at a time. To cope with this mounting anxiety, she found herself constantly daydreaming as an escape. She was also experiencing a pull to connect with her faith. After attending church with her aunt, she felt a strong calling to connect with God, but the heavy pressure of her daily life made it hard to stay on track.
She knew she needed a quiet space to untangle her thoughts. While searching her phone for a digital diary, she stumbled upon the Gratitude app. She downloaded it hoping to simply count her blessings, but having that small, safe place to write ended up being the gentle start to a much deeper journey of practicing gratitude.
For Latifia, practicing gratitude naturally became more than just making lists. It became about actively pausing to appreciate what was right in front of her and allowing that warmth to fill her heart. By looking for the good in her everyday routine, she cultivated a steady comfort inside herself. This genuine feeling of thankfulness helped quiet her mind and replaced her self doubt with a gentle inner peace.
She used this new mindset to actively fight back against her fears. She journaled about her first days of school and tracked the intense nerves she felt surrounding major Caribbean exams like CAPE and CSEC. When she felt overwhelmed, she began relying on positive affirmations to ground herself. She would intentionally write down phrases like “I can do this” and “I believe in myself.”
“Journaling out my thoughts, I saw some weaknesses to work on. So I actually felt a lot better. I gained a lot of confidence. I started feeling motivated to do something.” ~ Latifia
Day by day, this simple habit changed her life. By actively feeling grateful for her progress, she found a renewed sense of purpose. She started attending classes again and found her motivation returning. By the time she reached the ninth grade, her hard work paid off, and she was receiving academic awards. She did extremely well on her exams, stopped daydreaming to escape, and started living fully in the present.
Looking back on the notes she wrote at thirteen, Latifia is amazed by how far she has come. When asked what she would say to someone currently going through a hard time, her message is incredibly clear. She believes that giving up is never an option.
“Use your challenges as something to push you forward. Tell yourself that yes, I can do this. I will do this.” ~ Latifia
It is truly beautiful to see how a simple shift in mindset can change the entire course of a life. Latifia’s journey reminds us that the words we speak to ourselves hold incredible power. When we replace doubt with belief, we naturally open the door to a much brighter future.
We hope Latifia’s story helps you find your own inner strength today.
