For a long time, Jillian lived a life that was “pretty good.” Nestled among the mountains of Northern Utah, she was happy and had known about gratitude for years. But back then, her thankfulness was silent. She figured that as long as she thought she was grateful, it would be enough.
In early 2020, just before the world shifted under the weight of the pandemic, Jillian’s world changed in a much more literal and terrifying way. She, her husband, and her children were involved in a rollover car accident.
Emerging from the wreckage, the adrenaline eventually gave way to a profound and soul-searching stillness. Jillian began to ask herself the hard questions. Had she been taking this life for granted? Had she been as grateful as she thought?
She realised that while she was happy, she was not truly appreciative. She had been taking the miracle of her family’s safety and the breath in her lungs for granted. It took a few months of reflection to find the answer. When it came, it was simple. She needed to move gratitude from her thoughts into her actions.
Jillian discovered the Gratitude app through a friend and started a ritual that shifted her entire perspective. She stopped letting her thankfulness be a quiet thought and made it a physical action. Practicing gratitude daily helped her feel how precious it is to be grateful for what she already has. It gave her a sense of peace for the day ahead and showed her exactly where to look for the little things that matter.
She stopped just thinking about being thankful and started documenting it. She started enjoying different prompts she gets to write about. It helped with her journaling journey. One morning, when the app asked what she was grateful for, she found herself deeply thankful for the different colors in the sky. This simple habit helped her start noticing the beauty around her.
The path was rarely a straight line. Eventually, the tides turned and Jillian found herself drifting into a difficult period. Yet, life continued to offer its sharp lessons in perspective; when a high school friend began a courageous battle with cancer, Jillian was struck once again by the profound fragility of the body.
Today, Jillian’s life is defined by being intentional. As a mother of three, she balances family chaos with essential “me time” to keep her battery charged. The most profound change is her shift from reacting to situations to responding to them. She has learned that taking a single breath before entering a room changes the energy of her entire home.
Anytime she can remember to take a breath before going into a situation, she is more likely to respond than react. When her kids are not getting along, she finds she has a better chance of things working out without getting upset about the outcome. This simple pause has changed the energy of her entire home.
“By practicing gratitude daily, I feel like it has helped me be the person I want to be. It’s helped me reconnect more with my spiritual side, be a better wife, and a better mom. I am more calm and patient, and I have so much more joy in seeing the little things that life has.“

She has realized that the little things matter in a big way because moments go by too fast. To Jillian, the time she spends with her husband and kids is sacred. She knows that things change and you do not get that time back. She focuses on making memories that her family will always cherish. By practicing gratitude in different ways like saying it aloud and writing it down, Jillian feels she has finally become the person she wants to be. It helped her reconnect with her spiritual side and become a more patient mother. She finds so much joy in the small details, realising that knowing what she has is enough is the ultimate form of wealth. Jillian is no longer just “pretty happy.” She is deeply and actively awake.
“More people need to focus on gratitude because it brings joy, satisfaction, and a bigger perspective.”
~ Jillian
