Lula’s Victory In Brazil Is Good News For The Amazon
by Natalie Alcoba, Corporate Knights
Environmentalists exhaled with relief Sunday night after Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva clinched his fourth term as president in Brazil after a shocking come-from-behind win against Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Da Silva, commonly known as Lula, had lost the first round of voting earlier this month to Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro and leader of a surging right-wing movement that includes the powerful agricultural sector and evangelicals. Sunday’s results marked the first time that a presidential candidate who lost the first round was able to turn the results around in the second.
A Historic Win For Paid Parental Leave, Led By Nurses
by Chabeli Carrazana, The 19th
As a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit, Jean Stone knows what it really means to live in a country with no paid parental leave. She’s watched this scene play out so many times it’s almost the norm: Once their babies stabilize in the NICU, parents often return to work to preserve whatever parental leave they have left for when their babies come home. Stone calls the parents in the middle of the day to update them — starting each call with, “Everything is OK” — and watch them come in at the end of their workday, their faces reflecting the relief of reunion.

Though the ultimate destiny of these vast areas remains unclear, a decision was made between the agriculture and forestry ministries and the Indonesian National Economic Council that any further agriculture projects will take place on land that’s already been converted into productive use.

by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
After spending years without wheels but with no shortage of errands, a Minneapolis veteran recently received a transformational gift. Students at a Minnesota engineering school beautifully refurbished a 2020 Hyundai Elantra for the Recycled Rides for Schools program at the nonprofit National Auto Body Council. US Navy veteran Robert Hanson hasn’t had his own car for over 2 years. He has suffered severe health problems since his separation from the military, where he flew as a Navy airman from 1993 to 1997. Severe asthma and fibromyalgia issues make public transportation extremely difficult for Hanson.
