I was in my late 30s. I had finally finished my undergraduate degree but lived in an isolated community. I had graduated but had no personal transportation. Then I lost my apartment. My family was not in a position to help me. My mother cried when she realized my only option was to move to a homeless shelter in a neighboring community. I am bipolar and lost access to subsidized medication that I depended on. I knew my time to secure a new doctor was short. Fortunately, I had been a licensed professional massage therapist for almost 15 years at that point. I knew I could pick it back up and use it to start over while I looked for a new job with my newly earned degree. And that is exactly what I did.

I was offered a job in a neighboring state, and the Massage Company’s franchise gave me a bus ticket to get there and a temporary position at their front desk while I waited for my new license to clear. I moved from one homeless shelter to another. It was a long journey mentally and emotionally. It took almost four years before I found the Gratitude App and began using it around 2019-2020.

But so much had changed. I had gone through several doctors and finally secured a new mental health provider who solved not only my medication issues but also the difficult side effects, including unnecessary weight gain. I transitioned from renting rooms in other people’s homes to having my own apartment. I bought a used van and, when it died two years later, I had repaired my credit enough to qualify for a newer used car. It came with a very high monthly payment, but my mother was able to help me. Then GEICO offered me a much lower insurance rate based on my improved credit score. That payment made the difference between surviving or losing my car.

By this time, I had been using the Gratitude App for almost a year. Every day, I sent affirmations to my mother and sister, and it strengthened our relationships deeply. The app built my resilience and made the daily challenges of my job easier to handle.

The Gratitude App reminds me how far I’ve come. It reminds me how precious every single dollar is, and helps me avoid the resentment that comes from feeling taken for granted or overlooked.

I have come a long way. I just turned 46, and I have a new partner in my life who makes everyday challenges lighter simply by listening and sharing them with me. I am grateful for the Gratitude App. It keeps me grounded and focused.
