To whoever is reading this, I’m sure there have been times when you looked back and realized you were ungrateful, when life felt dark, foggy, and meaningless, when giving up seemed easier than holding on.
I’m 32 years old, but I feel like an old soul. I’ve been through more in these years than some people go through in a lifetime. I am a recovering addict. I’m also dual diagnosed, living with both addiction and mental health struggles. But that’s okay. There is nothing wrong with having mental health issues. In fact, I believe the majority of us carry something, whether diagnosed or not.
What’s made a difference in my life is practicing gratitude. Making a gratitude list every morning, downloading this app, and reminding myself to remain grateful and teachable has given me a life beyond my wildest dreams. And I’ve done it without needing drugs or alcohol to face each day.
Today, I am grateful to be alive. I am grateful to have a higher power guiding me. I’m grateful that I can help myself and also support others. I look forward to waking up and living each new day. Gratitude has changed my outlook. It has changed my life.
For anyone struggling, especially those living with addiction or mental health challenges, I want you to know this: making a gratitude list every morning or night truly shifts your perspective. When I entered recovery and handed my life over to my higher power, I realized just how important gratitude is.
So get the app. Start small. Write your list. Pray. Stay grateful. And watch your life change for the better. Trust me, if I can do it, so can you.
