It can be rather difficult to believe in ourselves sometimes, especially when we’re going through a difficult season of life. Our judgments, past experiences, internalized opinions of others, and fears can cloud our thinking and belief in ourselves and our capabilities.

Think of a time when you didn’t believe you could get through a situation, but you did anyway. I can think of my A Level examinations right now, and how, while I was going through a really difficult time in my life struggling with my mental health, I expected myself to fail my exams and score really badly. But despite all the suffering, I ended up scoring really well in my exams. If I hadn’t added to my suffering by doubting and criticizing myself constantly and had trusted myself instead, I would’ve still done well.

Self-trust, to me, is the foundation of growth and healing. Before you begin to work on yourself, trusting that you can get where you wish to be can become a sturdy base to fall back on, even if things don’t work out well. As we discussed in our previous blog on Inner Safety, after we consistently experience inner safety along with acceptance, we begin to trust ourselves more.

Trusting yourself begins slowly and is always a gentle process, but once you start practicing it more often, it helps you experience life differently, with more peace, ease, comfort and joy.
