A pair of lives that diverged down different paths have now become unlikely partners, merged within a common cause. 60-year-old Willette Benford spent 24 years—nearly half her life—in an Illinois prison until a change in state laws expedited her release. While behind bars though, Ms. Benford earned her GED and an associate’s degree, became an ordained minister, and provided much-needed counsel to support her fellow inmates. Helsinki Goes A Full Year Without A Traffic Death
by YLE News
Helsinki has not recorded a single traffic fatality in the past 12 months, city and police officials confirmed this week. The city’s most recent fatal accident occurred in early July 2024 on Keinulaudantie in the city’s Kontula district. According to Utriainen, more than half of Helsinki’s streets now have a speed limit of 30 km/h. Fifty years ago, that proportion featured 50 km/h limits.

Philanthropist Gives Away 500 Bikes To Milwaukee Youths
by Chesnie Wardell / Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service, Wisconsin Watch
After passing through the suburbs of Milwaukee, Eric “Shake” James realized there was a lack of bikes in Milwaukee’s underserved communities, prompting him to launch an annual bike giveaway called “Black on the Block.” James gave away 500 bikes on June 21 at 1935 W. Hampton Ave., along with free resources and food for families. James realized North Side children lacked exercise opportunities when he saw suburban children in Whitefish Bay and Oak Creek had tons of bikes and bike racks at their schools. “Those kids are riding to school, but when you come to the inner city, the kids here are getting to school solely on buses, and childhood obesity is like a real thing,” James said.
