This Teacher Gives Each Of Her Students $20 To Spend On An Act Of Kindness
by
Kristina Ulmer says people have the wrong idea about teenagers. For seven years now, the Pennsylvania Grade 9 English teacher has been running a “$20 Kindness Challenge” with her class, giving each student $20 US from a pool of donations, and asking them to do something kind with it. And every year, she says, the teens in her class bring her to tears with their creativity, empathy and generosity. “A lot of people stereotype that age, and they say they’re self-centered or, you know, they don’t see outside of themselves. And I just don’t see that,” Ulmer, a teacher at Hatboro-Horsham High School in Horsham, Penn., told As It Happens host Nil Köksal.
Clean Air Act Helped Reduce Metal Pollution In Adirondack Waters By 90%, Study Finds
by Cristen Hemingway Jaynes, EcoWatch
University of Albany researchers have presented the first recorded evidence that surface waters in the Adirondack Mountains have made an almost complete recovery — 90 percent — from metal pollution since enactment of the Clean Air Act. Amended in the decades since it first passed in 1963, the Clean Air Act was one of the United States’ first environmental laws and was intended to lower and control the country’s air pollution. One of the primary targets of the legislation was Adirondack Park, which had been impacted by decades of acid rain damage to the region’s forests, lakes and fish populations, a press release from the University at Albany (UAlbany) said.
After 50 Years, Trout Population Is Restored To Historic Numbers In One Of The Largest Lakes In US
by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
Through a combination of invasive species control and stocking with captive-raised fish, it’s now believed that a self-sustaining and harvestable population of lake trout has returned to Lake Champlain. Following this historic success, a decision has been made to suspend the stocking of the New York lake, believing wild-born, wild-grown trout will be able to survive and spawn to adulthood without human assistance. The decision was announced by the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Management Cooperative at its annual meeting on April 10th, 2025, and represents the culmination of 50 years of conservation work.
Solar Panels To Be Fitted On All New-Build Homes In England By 2027
by Eleni Courea, The Guardian
Almost all new homes in England will be fitted with solar panels during construction within two years, the government will announce after Keir Starmer rejected Tony Blair’s criticism of net zero policies. Housebuilders will be legally required to install solar panels on the roofs of new properties by 2027 under the plans. The policy is estimated to add between £3,000 and £4,000 to building a home but homeowners would save more than £1,000 on their annual energy bills, according to the Times. Labour has set a target of building 1.5m homes by the end of the parliament. The party has promised to decarbonise the electricity grid by 2030 and cut household energy bills.
9-Year-old Begs His Mom To Drive Back After Seeing Frantic Cow–Then Saves A Calf He Found In Ditch
by Good News Network
A nine-year-old boy was convinced something was wrong when he spotted a cow in a field acting erratically—and he would not stop begging his mother to turn the car around. Wyatt Ban was heading home with his mom after getting breakfast on Tuesday when he saw the mother cow running around frantically near Eminence, Indiana. She initially brushed it off, but Wyatt was relentless. “I didn’t think anything of it at first, but he was so upset and kept saying we had to go back, so I turned around.” After pulling off near a bridge, Wyatt told her to stay in the car, saying he could fit through the fence.
