Teacher ‘Refusing To Pay $175/Hour’ For Therapy Shares The No-Cost Mental Health Resources They Use Instead
by Emily Shiffer, Upworthy
Mental health therapy in the United States is expensive. According to a 2024 study that analyzed over 175,000 psychotherapy providers, the average cost of a therapy session was $143.26 for those paying cash without insurance coverage. Unfortunately, the high costs of mental health services and support can prevent many people from getting the help they need. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), nearly half of Americans with mental health needs go without treatment. To help others, a teacher on Reddit making a “teacher salary” with “teacher mental health needs” shared the affordable mental health resources they discovered to help them stay well on a small budget after “refusing to pay $175/hour.”
London, San Francisco And Beijing Achieve ‘Remarkable Reductions’ In Air Pollution
by Ajit Niranjan, The Guardian
London, San Francisco and Beijing are among 19 global cities that have achieved “remarkable reductions” in air pollution, analysis has found, having slashed levels of two airway-aggravating pollutants by more than 20% since 2010. The analysis found interventions such as cycle lanes, uptake of electric cars and restrictions on polluting vehicles had helped to drive the improvements. Beijing and Warsaw topped the ranking for cleaning up fine particulate pollution (PM2.5), reducing levels by more than 45%, while Amsterdam and Rotterdam saw the greatest improvement in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), with cuts of more than 40%.
Massachusetts Millionaire Tax Raises $5.7 Billion For Public Transport And Education
by Kontrast.at, The Better
The US state of Massachusetts provides an example of how a higher contribution from millionaires benefits everyone. A reform passed by voters in 2022 introduced an additional 4% tax on annual incomes above one million dollars. The resulting additional funds are earmarked for investment in public services. The new mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, sees this so-called fair share tax as a model. During his election campaign, he also called for an additional tax of 2% on urban incomes above one million dollars. His goal: to use the money raised to finance the fight against New York’s housing shortage.
EVs Are Already Making Your Air Cleaner
by Tik Root, Grist
The logic behind electric vehicles benefiting public health has long been solid: More EVs means fewer internal combustion engines on the road, and a reduction in harmful tailpipe emissions. But now researchers have confirmed, to the greatest extent yet, that this is indeed what’s actually happening on the ground. What’s more, they found that even relatively small upticks in EV adoption can have a measurably positive impact on a community. Whereas previous work has largely been based on modeling, a study published this month in the journal Lancet Planetary Health used satellites to measure actual emissions.
Schoolboy With ‘Can-Do’ Attitude Has Recycled A Million Cans And Donated The Proceeds To Charity
by Andy Corbley, Good News Network
A 13-year-old boy has raised thousands of dollars for charity by recycling more than a million aluminum cans. Young Ryan Hulance came up with the idea as a way to make money for foodbanks while also caring for the environment. From his home in Solihull in England’s West Midlands, he started contacting businesses asking if they could spare any cans which he could sell. Ryan started collecting a few hundred cans per week in 2023 to store at his home, which is when his parents got on board, crushing the cans to save space by driving over them in their car before Ryan bagged them up.
